Located in Cape Town, South Africa, this paragliding site offers a medium-altitude launch ranging from 212 to 280 meters. It's a popular spot for walk-and-fly enthusiasts and is regularly used for soaring, thermal soaring, and mini cross-country flights. The slope is generally fine, but the takeoff areas are not well-prepared and are covered with scrubs. There are multiple takeoff options within a 400-meter radius to accommodate different wind directions. However, avoid the area near the venturi, especially on the northeast side, as it can be dangerous. The best wind conditions for this site are from the northwest at speeds less than 25 km/h, with 15 km/h being ideal. Note that this site is not suitable for students. The site offers smooth soaring on a conical peak adjacent to Table Mountain, providing stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. However, be cautious of varying air temperatures before launch and the venturi effect near the Mast. White caps on the sea can also indicate challenging conditions. To reach the launch area, walk along the tarred road inside the security gate (press the buzzer and ask security to open it for you). You can either launch from the Mast or continue along the path for 10 minutes to the middle of the slope. Before launching, check the tide and beach crowd conditions, especially in summer. The slopes are covered with short kikuyu grass, bushes, and granite bedrock. Access to the launch area is via the tar service road to the Telkom aerials. The site is also known as Little Lion's Head and offers a wonderful view of Hout Bay, Karbonkelberg, and parts of the coastline to Lion’s Head. Soaring here is usually smooth and straightforward. If you misjudge the wind, you may need to gain height quickly and navigate to the venturi to land safely in Hout Bay. The beach landing area can be small, so check it before flying. A windsock on the beach can help with landing judgment. Directions: Follow the coastal road from Camps Bay towards Hout Bay. Turn right to Llandudno and bear right to check out the landing site on the beach. Continue straight over to Hout Bay and take the turning to the right signposted ‘Kleinleeukop / Little Lions Head’. Keep right at every intersection to reach the locked gate to the radio mast. Park your vehicle clear of the entrance and walk along the tar road to the radio mast.
